Hirudo Therapy
Hirudotherapy is a natural treatment that uses medical leeches and their unique bioactive substances to support circulation, tissue recovery, and the body's natural healing processes. This gentle therapy may help promote comfort, balance, and overall wellbeing.

Hirudotherapy is a traditional, natural therapy that uses specially bred medical leeches to support the body's recovery processes. While this therapy has been used in human healthcare for centuries, it is increasingly being applied in the care of horses and other animals as awareness of complementary and holistic treatment approaches continues to grow.
Medical leeches are often referred to as a "living pharmacy" because their saliva contains a unique combination of bioactive substances that are released during feeding. These naturally occurring compounds have been extensively studied and are known to support local circulation and tissue recovery. The combination of these substances is unique and cannot be replicated in exactly the same way by a single medication.
By supporting healthy circulation and tissue function, hirudotherapy may help promote comfort, mobility, and overall wellbeing. It is commonly used as part of a holistic approach for horses experiencing musculoskeletal discomfort, swelling, scar tissue restrictions, skin conditions, or recovery challenges.
Conditions Commonly Supported
Hirudotherapy may be considered as a complementary therapy for:
-
Joint discomfort and degenerative joint conditions
-
Tendon and ligament-related concerns
-
Swelling, fluid accumulation, and circulatory challenges
-
Scar tissue and post-surgical recovery
-
Muscle tension and areas of chronic tightness
-
Back and spinal discomfort
-
Hoof-related concerns
-
Skin irritations and certain chronic skin conditions
-
Hematomas and localized tissue congestion
-
General recovery support and wellbeing
Every horse is assessed individually, and suitability for treatment is determined on a case-by-case basis.
What Happens During a Treatment?
A typical session lasts approximately 60 to 90 minutes. After an assessment, medical leeches are carefully placed on predetermined treatment locations. The leech naturally attaches itself and begins feeding while releasing its bioactive substances into the surrounding tissues.
Most horses tolerate the treatment exceptionally well and often remain calm and relaxed throughout the session. Many horses show signs of deep relaxation and may even rest or doze during treatment.
The leeches remain attached for approximately 15 to 90 minutes before naturally detaching on their own. Following treatment, a small amount of after-bleeding is expected and forms a normal part of the therapeutic process.
Aftercare
Following treatment, it is normal for the bite sites to continue bleeding for approximately 4 to 12 hours. This after-bleeding is a natural and beneficial part of the therapy.
Medical leeches release bioactive substances such as Hirudin and Calin, which support circulation and temporarily prevent blood clotting around the treatment area. This helps promote local blood flow and tissue drainage.
The bite sites are usually left uncovered, provided the horse has access to a reasonably clean environment. Mild swelling, warmth, or itching around the bite site may occur and is generally a normal temporary response.
History of Hirudotherapy
The use of medical leeches dates back thousands of years and can be traced to ancient Egypt, Greece, India, and Persia. Throughout history, leeches have been used to support health, circulation, and recovery. While their use declined with the rise of modern medicine, scientific research in recent decades has renewed interest in hirudotherapy and helped explain the unique properties of leech saliva.
Today, medical leeches are bred under strict quality standards and are used worldwide in both human and veterinary care. Modern research has identified more than 80 bioactive substances within leech saliva, many of which contribute to the therapy's supportive effects on circulation, tissue recovery, and overall wellbeing.
